Social Activities

1. Women/Child Health & Population Control Program: The Sri Ram Vidyapeeth and DPS Social Society support programmes for rural and tribal population. These attend to mother and child health, infectious diseases and the emerging problem of diseases like diabetes and hypertension amongst the poor. The programmes also focus on including the community in decision making and service delivery. The National Health Policy (NHP) 2002 emphasized the need to train more personnel in Public Health, citing that the discipline has an interface with many other developmental sectors. The NHP also held that specialization in Public Health may be encouraged not only for medical doctors, but also for non-medical graduates from allied fields. Further, the Government of India proposed a National Council for Human Resources within its Health Draft Bill, 2009.

2. Environment Conservation/Agriculture/Soil Conservation Program: Continuing the work from last year Sri Ram Vidyapeeth & DPS Social Society work very aggressively on this front. The initiative works towards ensuring year-round food security of communities across the India, promotion of allied livelihood interventions such as forest based livelihoods, animal husbandry, improved agriculture, etc., promoting microfinance through community based institutions; and developing strategic partnerships with various stakeholders for promoting livelihood of communities. Amongst other things:
(a) promoting agricultural diversification by demonstrating and popularizing alternate cropping systems to the presently widely prevailing practice of cultivating rice, wheat; and
(b) demonstrating the benefits of Integrated Pest. All efforts in this endeavour are directed to minimize over-exploitation of groundwater, improve soil health and reduce cost of cultivation through judicious use of agro chemicals. SRV & DPS Social Society plants this year also around 1500 plants with the help of Horticultural Department & also organize various awareness for environmental conservation.

3. Road Safety & Drug De-Addiction Program: SRV & DPS Social Society along with traffic police hosts a week long program on drug de-addiction & road safety. In this program the speaker give the information about the main cause of road accident is drunken drive. Each one brief the harms caused by addiction of alcoholic beverages. SRV & DPS Social Society organizes various arts & painting competition on this issue.

4. Handicapped & Old Age Person Program: SRV & DPS Social Society hosts various events for the welfare of physically challenged person & old age person. SRV & DPS Social Society provides wheel chair & cloths, foods & blankets for old age people with the help of Social Justice & Empowerment Department.

5. Income Enhancement Program: The Income Enhancement program focuses on agriculture and entrepreneurship. It facilitates the setting up of mutually beneficial working relationships between appropriate parties to generate means of supplementing the villagers’ income.
Workshops popular with the young men of the youth clubs include sessions on personal goal setting, having a positive attitude about their village, the value of taking on community responsibility, and applied problem solving. The curriculum includes information on socially sensitive issues like reproductive health, which are discussed only after a rapport has been established between the instructor and the students.
So far 684 girls have passed out from the FLE centers. Each batch of girls goes through a six-month curriculum.
Self Help Groups (SHGs) are a proven tool to economically empower women and increase their participation in the family and community. Almost all indicators of our Self Help Groups (SHGs) are positive. Over 95% of the members are saving regularly. There is no default in loan repayment, and the share of productive loans versus consumption loans is steadily increasing.
The SHG women are receptive to new ideas, as they have directly benefited from the Society’s activities. They become keen to improve conditions in their villages and are trained by the Society on various development issues.
These women spread positive messages among other women in the community. The Society’s Family Life Education program addresses the issues of literacy, gender sensitization and skills training that will help youth to have a better quality of life.

6. Social & Consumer Welfare Program: A typical VC is a literate person selected from these villages. S/he is enthusiastic about the work, compassionate towards the villagers, and committed to the cause of social development. This year, we selected the first batch of six VCs through a systematic process. Their training includes project management, fund-raising and program details. The Program Leaders have prepared a comprehensive draft curriculum for their training, which will be refined after our experience with these champions is assessed.
A seminar was also organized on consumer welfare issue. The Seminar was attended by teachers, students, and professionals from various schools and colleges in Uttar Pradesh. The Seminar focused on increasing the role of NGOs organizations in the consumer movement and also sensitising the students about the need to take up research studies in the area of consumer protection and welfare. The seminar was divided into six sessions in which papers on various themes relating to consumer welfare were presented. Mr. Ajay Kumar discussed various dimensions of consumer protection and said that legal aspect is just one part of consumer protection. What is of more importance is the education and empowerment of the consumers to take rational decisions? He pointed out that as far as the study of consumer protection is concerned it is mainly confined to law departments. There is need for the educational institutes to take a lead in empowering the consumers and in this endeavor the students can play a major role.

7. Fresh Water/Cleanliness & Sanitization Program: Most of the diseases prevalent in rural India are due to lack of sanitation and poor quality of drinking water. Ground water gets contaminated from field defecation and excess use of pesticides and fertilizers — causing gastroenteritis, jaundice, diarrhea, typhoid, and other diseases. Part of the problem is that the villagers are often unaware of the issues, and do not appear to mind the buildup of public garbage or want to change the latrine habits to which they are accustomed. A cleanliness drive is an integral part of the Society’s activity. It includes spreading the knowledge on soak pits, stand posts with taps, latrines, street sweeping and garbage disposal.
Soak pits are initially introduced to homes that are closest to the three or four main village streets, so that their domestic water does not flow into these streets. We believe that after a critical mass is reached, we should witness an exponential growth.
With a view to brand all water and sanitation projects under one umbrella, the Society have initiated the ‘Swach Jal Abhiyan’. Primary objectives of ‘Swach Jal Abhyan’ are to create awareness among the communities about safe drinking water across the country and its impact on health. This campaign would be operationalized over the coming year. The Society would also work towards spreading its water and sanitation interventions across poorvanchal Uttar Pradesh.

8. Education/School Chalo Abhiyan: Sri Ram Vidyapeeth, along with DPS Social Society developed various MOUs & collaboration of different computer banners to reach out the grass root level for its Computer Literacy Program like Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar Computer Saksharta Mission, HIIT, SITD & many more. The fundamental function of this is to provide higher & technical education to weaker section of society at minimum coaching fee for urban as well as rural areas.
In the process of transforming India from a developing nation to a developed one by 2020, computers will definitely have an important role to play, keeping this fact foremost in mind DPS Social Society has taken this mission to make India a 100% computer literate nation by 2020.
